Tail-end ryots seek early release of water

By Our Staff Reporter

Thanjavur Oct. 3. Various farmers' organisations in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts today demanded convening the Cauvery River Authority and take steps for release of Cauvery water for samba cultivation.

Farmers in the tail end districts of Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam could not take up kuruvai cultivation this year due to water shortage.

When they were pinning their hopes on samba, water release from Mettur dam is being delayed. Moreover, delayed release of water posed a danger to samba crops getting damaged in the North East monsoon in November. Hence, the CRA should be convened to release water as per the interim award of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal. Steps should also be taken to get the final award before March 2004.
