Minister's claim on Vaastu debunked

Bangalore Oct. 5. It is not the imperfect Vaastu of some public buildings but the wrong policies which had engendered problems, the AIPJD leader and former Education Minister, B. Somashekar, has said in a rejoinder to the views expressed by the Urban Development Minister, D.K. Shivakumar.

In a statement to the press, Mr. Somashekar said that the Minister had exhibited his lack of scientific temper, the promotion of which was a fundamental duty under the Constitution.

At a seminar on Vaastu, Mr. Shivakumar is reported to have blamed the imperfect Vaastu of some of the public buildings for the crises faced by the Government in the past three years.

He is reported to have attributed the Rajkumar kidnap episode of 2000 and the other crises faced by the S.M. Krishna Government to a ditch that existed to the south of the new block of the Vidhana Soudha which is under construction.

After the ditch was filled up, the Government had not faced any crisis. Mr. Shivakumar is also reported to have blamed the Vaastu of the new building of the State's Common Entrance Test Cell at Malleswaram for the impediments faced in making admissions to professional colleges this year. Mr. Somashekar said that it was not Vaastu but the policies of the Government that were responsible for the imbroglio in admissions to professional colleges.

The Government faced no difficulties as long as it was siding with the students with merit. Once it began to favour the managements of private professional colleges, the problems arose.

Mr. Shivakumar was promoting superstition and obscurantism by supporting Vaastu Shastra, Mr. Somashekar alleged.

The AIPJD Floor leader in the Legislative Assembly also recalled his opposition to the directive issued by the Muzrai Department some months ago to the temples in the State to arrange for special prayers to bring rain.
