All about Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium

By Mohandas Menon

** The Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium was completed in a record time of about nine months in 1983. The Government of Gujarat allotted a piece of land covering about 50 acres on the bank of the river Sabarmati, near Motera, which is located at the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

** This is the first cricket stadium in India which has fiber-glass chairs and fiber coloured benches. A trench around the playing area to stop spectators from invading the ground is also an innovation. The stadium can hold about 50,000 spectators. Floodlights were installed in 1998.

** The first ever first-class match staged in this stadium was the Test match between India and West Indies (Nov. 12-16, 1983). The stadium has also hosted ten limited-over international matches since October 1984, including two World Cup matches in 1987 and 1996.

** The home team's 583-7 (decl.) against New Zealand in 1999 is the highest total recorded at this venue, while India's 103 against the West Indies in 1983 in the inaugural match is the lowest.

** In all, eight centuries have been scored here with Sachin Tendulkar registering two — 217 against New Zealand in 1999 and 103 against England in 2001. Incidentally, Tendulkar's 217 remains the highest individual score in this venue.

** Kapil Dev's 9-83 against the Windies in 1983 is the best bowling figures, while left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju's 11-125 against Sri Lanka in 1994 is the best by any bowler in a match.

** The stadium has also hosted 16 other first-class matches since January 1984, which includes 15 Ranji Trophy matches.

** In the six Test matches so far hosted here, batsmen have aggregated 5211 runs at an average of 27.57 with 8 hundreds and 26 fifties, while bowlers have captured 182 wickets at 29.12.
