Delhi-Manila extradition pact soon

By Our Diplomatic Correspondent

NUSA DUA (BALI) Oct. 7. India and the Philippines will shortly sign an extradition treaty, the External Affairs Ministry spokesman said after a meeting between the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and the Philippines President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, today.

The Treaty will be signed when the Filipino Justice Minister visits New Delhi, the spokesman said. They also discussed ways and means to strengthen defence ties and noted the visit by the Army Chief, N.C. Vij, to Manila.

During the meeting, Ms. Arroyo told Mr. Vajpayee that there was not enough interaction between the two countries and stressed the need for increased bilateral trade.

The Prime Minister, who also held discussions with his Singapore counterpart, Goh Chok Tong, noted the progress in the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement currently under discussion between the two countries. According to the spokesman, the CECA is expected to be signed in April 2004 when Mr. Goh visits New Delhi to receive the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding.
