Four Army men held for `assaulting' girl

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI OCT. 8. Four Army men, posted with the President's Cavalry Guard unit, who allegedly criminally assaulted a first year Delhi University student at Budhha Jayanti Park in Chanakyapuri on Monday, have been arrested.

The incident happened around 11 a.m. at Buddha Jayanti Park on Monday when the Dalai Lama was holding a religious discourse which was being attended by the former President, R. Venkataraman.

The victim, a resident of South-West Delhi, had gone to the Park along with her friend, Ashish. When they entered a dense forest area, they saw four men in Army uniform approaching them. The Army men questioned them and forced them to walk up to an Army vehicle.

They took away the girl in the vehicle, leaving behind Ashish after extorting Rs. 100 from him. After a five-minute drive, they stopped at a place where two of them allegedly criminally assaulted the girl. Then they robbed her of Rs. 120 and vanished from the scene.

The girl found Ashish with some police personnel and the garden staff. The police and the visitors tracked down one of the accused, Harpreet Singh. His uniform was recovered from there. Later, Army officials handed over the three other accused — Satinder, Manish and Kuldeep — to the police. Meanwhile, the Army today issued a release saying it had taken serious note of the incident. A senior Army officer and his wife met the parents of the victim to express regret over the incident.
