DMK won't settle for POTA amendments

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Oct. 8. ``The DMK is firm on total withdrawal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act and it is not ready to accept any amendments'', said the party president, M.Karunanidhi here today.

Talking to newsmen here, he said the party's December 1 agitation would focus on the need for repealing the Act as it was being ``misused by some State Governments, including Tamil Nadu.'' It would not accept the BJP president, M. Venkaiah Naidu's suggestion for amendments to safeguard against misuse of the legislation.

As a prelude to the agitation, the DMK would organise public meetings throughout the State to mobilise people's support for the stir. Already, the party had received moral support from various parties, including the Congress, the PMK, the Indian National League and the CPI.

Mr. Karunanidhi replied in the negative when asked whether he had received any invitation from the BJP high command for discussions for bringing to an end the ``strained relations'' between the DMK and the State BJP unit.

`PM must convene CRA'

Reiterating his demand for early convening of the Cauvery River Authority by the Prime Minister, A.B.Vajpayee, Mr.Karunanidhi said that according to delta farmers, the current storage in the Mettur reservoir was not sufficient even for 20 days. The farmers required more water for farming operations. It was for the Tamil Nadu Government to take immediate steps to provide them adequate supply.

Referring to the recent raids on the houses of former DMK MLAs, he said the searches apart, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption was issuing ``false statements'' against them.
