Sania in semifinals

NEW DELHI OCT. 9. The top-seeded Sania Mirza made it to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over seventh-seeded Wilawan Choptang of Thailand in the second $10,000 ITF women's circuit tennis tournament in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Thursday.

The 16-year-old Sania, who has won six singles titles in the professional circuit, will play Montinee Tangphong of Thailand in the semifinals.

In doubles, top-seeded Sania and Rushmi Chakravarthi entered the semifinals, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mimma Chernovita and Eny Sulistyowati of Indonesia. Sania and Rushmi had beaten Chattida Thimjapo and Varanya Vijuksanaboon of Thailand 6-1, 6-2 in the first round.

Second-seeded Shruti Dhawan and Wilawan Choptang, who had made the final last week, lost 6-7 (1-7), 6-7 (5-7) to Septi Mende and Maya Rosa of Indonesia in the quarterfinals. Septi and Maya led 6-2 when their opponents Meng Yuan of China and Samrita Sekar retired in the first round.

Shruti and partner had beaten Ayu-Fani Damayanti and Febri Joana of Indonesia 6-4, 6-4 in the first round.

Liza Pereira and Orawan Lamangthong of Thailand lost 4-6, 3-6 to Liza Andriyani and Diana Julianto of Indonesia in the quarterfinals. The Indo-Thai combination had earlier beaten wild cards Mia Sacca and Mega Sukmawati of Indonesia 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 in the first round.

Isha Lakhani and Sonal Phadke went down fighting 6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (6-8) to qualifiers Mimma Chernovita and Eny Sulistyowati in the first round.

Karan in quarterfinals

Fourth-seeded Karan Rastogi made it to the quarterfinals of the Osaka Super juniors grade `A' ITF tennis tournament in Japan on Thursday, with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Philipp Oswald of Austria.

Karan, who had made it to the quarterfinals of the last edition as well, will play the sixth-seeded Woong-Sun Jun of Korea in the quarterfinals.

In the boys' doubles, second-seeded Divij Sharan and R. Arun Prakash made the semifinals as they got a walkover from Todd Ley of Australia and Marc Spicijaric of the U.S. The Indian pair will meet Weerapat Doakmaiklee and Kirati Siributwong of Thailand in the semifinals.

Shweta enters final

Top-seeded G.K. Shweta defeated third-seeded Nungnudda Wannasuk of Thailand 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals of the ITF junior tennis tournament in Islamabad, Pakistan on Thursday.

Shweta, who had lost to the same opponent in the last tournament at the same venue, will play second-seeded Punjaporn Ditthim of Thailand in the final. The Thai girl had beaten Daksha Mullay 6-3, 6-3 in the other semifinals.

In the boys' doubles, top-seeded Rupesh Roy and Sumit Prakash Gupta beat Mutib Pasha and Adnan Khan of Pakistan 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. The duo will meet third-seeded Shahzad Khan and Wasif Cheema of Pakistan who ousted Lalit Mann and Sandeep Kumar 6-7 (2-7), 1-6.

Kaushik Das, in partnership with Peerakit Siributwong of Thailand, made the semifinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) triumph over fourth-seeded Mohammad Usman Ejaz and Danish Ahmed of Pakistan. The Inod-Thai pair will take on second-seeded Indo-Lankan combination of Vivek Shokeen and N.S. Nishendiran. The latter got a walkover from Nouman Ul Haq and Numan Yahya of Pakistan.
