COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore District Mill Workers' Union has announced that it would launch an indefinite strike from October 17 if the bonus issue was not resolved by then. According to M. Arumugham, General Secretary of the union, about one lakh workers are employed in about 1,400 textile mills in Coimbatore and Erode districts. The Joint Action Council of the Coimbatore-Erode District Mill Workers' Union had appealed to the managements of these units and also the management bodies like the Southern India Mills Association, South India Small Spinners Association and NTC administration to grant them a minimum of 15 per cent and a maximum of 30 per cent of the wages as bonus to workers. However, neither did the management associations nor the individual managements come forward so far to settle the issue. Hence, it had been decided to resort to indefinite strike.
