CPI leader calls for reason from Govt., PW

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Oct. 9. S. Sudhakar Reddy, Secretary of the State Council of the CPI, on Thursday called for "objective thinking" on both the Government and the People's War sides, on the vexatious issue of continuing violence and counter violence and work for creating a conducive atmosphere for holding talks.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Reddy expressed surprise at the way the Telugu Desam Party leaders were busy calculating the "sympathy factor" in the aftermath of the naxalite attack on the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and holding of early elections, instead of chalking out a strategy for solving immediate problems, including the vicious cycle of violence.

He said the letter purported to have been sent by the People's War holding fresh threats targeting the Chief Minister and others, was not good. Such attempts and threats have no place in a democracy. Seen with the reports on "retributive violence and encounter killings" planned by the State Police against the People's War, the State seems to be sliding back to the era of violence. Both the Government and the PW should realise that they have not achieved anything by resorting to violence.

Reiterating the party's stand that the naxalite problem should not be viewed as a law and order one but one that has social and economic dimensions. A political solution through talks is the only way out, he said.

He criticised the Government for transferring M. V. Krishna Rao from the post of the Commissioner of City Police, in an attempt to appease the BJP. "He cannot be transferred just because he made some comments against the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi."

Mr. Reddy appealed to the Government to take a sympathetic view and grant permission to the CPI for holding a public meeting at the NTR Stadium on October 15. Though the party had applied for the same two months ago, the Government has deferred its decision to October 13. Referring to a High Court order in this regard, he said holding rallies is a democratic right of the people. The party tried for Nizam College grounds but it was denied permission as the venue was already given away for holding an exhibition.

K. Narayana, Assistant Secretary of the State CPI, wanted the Government not to close and dispose of sugar factories but allow cooperatives to run them.
