13 accused surrender

By Manas Dasgupta

AHMEDABAD Oct. 9. Thirteen of the 21 accused in the Best Bakery case surrendered before the Vadodara police today and were later released on conditional bail. The bailable arrest warrants were issued on Tuesday as per the directive of the Gujarat High Court which admitted a revised and amended petition last month for a re-trial of the case after H.U. Mahida of the Vadodara fast track court acquitted all the 21 accused in June as more than 70 per cent of the 73 witnesses in the case turned hostile.

The police said 13 of the accused presented themselves before the Panigate police station in Vadodara this afternoon and were produced before the fast track court of Mr. Mahida, who granted them bail on personal surety of Rs. 10,000 each.

The police said warrants could not be served on the remaining accused as they were either out of station or had approached the Supreme Court or High Court on different issues.
