`CM should seek vote of confidence'

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM OCT. 9. The former Chief Secretary, T. N. Jayachandran, on Thursday suggested that the Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, should seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly.

``This would be the best solution for the present political crisis in the State,'' Mr. Jayachandran said in a statement.

The Chief Minister could retain his image and confirm the positions of his supporters through the motion. The move might also help to check erosion of support and control crafty UDF constituents.

Mr. Jayachandran noted that though the UDF is said to have the support of 100 members of the Assembly, the situation was such that 23 Congress members might withdraw their support any time. The Muslim League had also expressed their dissatisfaction about the functioning of the ministry. One could not be certain about the positions of other constituents. For all of them, continuation in power was important.

The main Opposition parties, the CPI(M) and the CPI were working to bring down the Government at any cost. The KPCC president, K. Muraleedharan, and Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, too wanted to bring down the Government even with the support of Opposition parties.

Mr. Jayachandran noted that it was the Congress high command which should be finding a solution to the problem. However, the Congress was having the weakest of leaderships now. It could not take any action against Mr. Karunakaran for indiscipline though he had repeatedly breached party discipline. The KPCC president, K. Muraleedharan, was running a tirade against the Government from the streets. The leadership could not take any action against the KPCC president and the members of the Assembly which defied its directives, he said.
