Support for ryots

NAGAPATTINAM: Marketing support extended by the Nagapattinam Marketing Committee has helped the ryots in Nagapattinam district secure a reasonable price for their sunflower seeds. The farmers took up cultivation of sunflower in a limited area during the kharif season this year instead of going in for paddy cultivation.

The average price offered by traders to the sunflower seeds auctioned through the Mayiladuthurai regulated market last month hovered around Rs. 1750 a quintal. Around 12 tonnes of sunflower seeds were disposed of by the ryots through the regulated market last month, according to M. R. Singaravelu, Secretary (in charge), Nagapattinam Marketing Committee. — Our Staff Reporter
