Khurana likely to contest Assembly poll

NEW DELHI OCT. 10. The Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party Election Committee at its first meeting here today unanimously urged the Central leadership to field the Delhi BJP president, Madan Lal Khurana, in the Delhi Assembly elections to be held on December 1. However, it was not clear if Mr. Khurana, who is a sitting Member of Parliament from Sadar Bazar, would resign from the Parliament to contest the Assembly poll. The meeting was held at the residence of the South Delhi BJP MP, Vijay Kumar Malhotra.

The Election Committee also decided that applications for party ticket would be received in the party office from October 11 to 15. The applicants would have to file with the application an affidavit and bio-data stating whether any criminal or court cases are pending against him or her in any part of the country. All the candidates have been asked to deposit Rs. 1,000 with the application. The amount would be Rs. 500 in the case of ST/SC candidates

The committee also gave its formal approval to the poll agreement with the Akali Dal for Delhi. The Akali Dal will contest five Assembly seats on the BJP symbol. Mr. Malhotra said consultations for filtering the list of candidates at the district would be held on October 17 and 18 after which the recommendations would be placed before the Election Committee. The same would be forwarded to the Central Election Committee by the last week of this month for formal approval.

Later, talking to newsmen, Mr. Khurana accused the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, of misleading the people of Delhi by stating that the prices of onion, potatoes and green vegetables were normal and there was no shortage of these commodities in the Capital. Mr. Khurana said that the Congress party had come to power during the last Assembly polls on the onion crisis plank and now when it is faced with the same problem, it was trying to paint a rosy picture of the situation. He charged Ms. Dikshit with indulging in double talk and sought a firm reply as to why action was not being taken against the hoarders who happened to enjoy the patronage of the Congress and even office bearers of the ruling party. Expressing concern over the rising incidents of dengue fever in the Capital, the former Chief Minister sought the resignation of the Leader of the House in MCD, Ram Babu Sharma and the Delhi Mayor, Ashok Kumar Jain, for having failed to take effective steps to prevent occurrence of dengue in the Capital.

Charing the Congress ruled civic body with being ineffective and corrupt, Mr. Khurana said roads in Delhi were in a bad shape and the situation on the sanitation front had gone from bad to worse. There is no proper disposal of the garbage and heaps of garbage remains piled up at various places across the Capital. Despite the situation being so grave, there is no visible action on part of the civic authorities, which explained the pathetic state of affairs in the MCD. He said series of rallies would be organised in all the 16 districts of the party to protest against the scam in privatisation of power in Delhi. He said the first such rally would be organised tomorrow at the Fruit and Vegetable Market, Azadpur in which the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Vinod Khanna and former wrestler and Rajya Sabha MP, Dara Singh, would take part.
