Mixed day for Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI OCT 11. Poor Nikhil Mundra was under pressure. Everything depended on this stout lad if TamilNadu `B' was to beat West Bengal which had in its rank, one of India's top junior Ramit Tandon.

As it turned out, Nikhil could grab only a game from Rahul Bangur before crashing out and in the process give the visitor its first league win (2-1) in the boys' under-15 pool `A' of the junior inter-state squash championship which got underway at the TNSRA-SDAT courts on Saturday. This is the inaugural year for the team events and competition for the first year has been restricted to the under-19 and under-15 sections. Overall Tamil Nadu had a mixed day with the main team doing well but the `B' squash slipping here and there. The loss against New Delhi in the u-15 section for instance seemed improbable when Ashwin Sridhar let 2-0 over Karm Kumar. But there Ashwin's fight ended and with that Tamil Nadu's chances.

Among the other teams Maharashtra had the best outing. It did not lose a single tie in any section, a clear indication of the shape of things ahead. A few top players like Ramit, Saurav Ghosal, Parthiban, Deepika Pallikal were seen in action and expectedly each ensured a short stay on the court with their respective opponent unable to make an impression.#Saurav, Parthiban and Vinayak Shetty ensured a clean 3-0 sweep over New Delhi `B' with the latter managing just three points in the three matches. Preceding this was a 3-0 sweep over West Bengal.

The results:

Boys: Under-19: Pool `A': Madhya Pradesh beat Tamil Nadu `B' 2-1; Maharashtra beat Uttaranchal 3-0; Tamil Nadu `B' beat Uttaranchal 3-0; New Delhi beat MP 3-0; Pool `B': Tamil Nadu beat West Bengal 3-0; Maharashtra `B' beat Rajasthan 3-0; Tamil Nadu beat New Delhi `B' 3-0; Maharashtra `B' beat West Bengal 3-0.
