Air India in semifinals

MUMBAI Oct. 11 Air-India, Mumbai, cruised into the semifinals of the all-India Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup hockey on Saturday, warding off a spirited Central Railway's fightback in the second half to win 4-0 at the Mahindra stadium.

Kishore Kumar's positioning and passing helped play a major part in the victory as he and Roshan Tete helped themselves to two goals each.

Punjab & Sind Bank took apart Indian Navy 4-1 in an earlier pre-quarterfinal match after being a goal down in the 20th minute, defender Sharanjit Singh converting two penalty corners.

AI cashed in on Central's hesitant approach and a defence engaged in ball-watching to sneak in two goals before the rivals got wise.

Kishore netting both field goals past a rival defence and set up the third goal for Roshan. Central brought in Shailender Singh Rana in Arun Gurung's place under the bar, though it would be unfair to blame the custodian for defensive lapses in clearing balls hit into the goalmouth.

Shailender however prove his worth with three creditable saves, two field and one off a penalty corner to keep an aggressive AI to just one goal in the second half. The tournament is organised by Bombay Hockey Association.

The results (quarterfinal): Air-India 4 (Kishore Kumar 2, Roshan Tete 2) bt Central Railway 0; Punjab & Sind Bank 4 (Sharanjit Singh 2, Parminder Singh, Rajwinder Singh) bt Indian Navy 1 (Manoj Lokhande).
