The Suryakanthi exhibition grounds within the palace premises, the Observatory Hills, the Institution of Engineers Hall and the Jawahar Balbhavan will be the other venues for the show, scheduled to be held from January 23 to February 1. Estimated to cost Rs. 50 lakhs, the 10-day flower show is being organised by the Tourism Department in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture, National Horticulture Board, Kerala Agri-Horticulture Society, Kerala Rose Society and the city Corporation. Natural flower-beds, which can accommodate 36,000 plants, would be set up in 12,000 sq.ft as all forms of construction have been banned on the Kanakakkunnu Palace premises. Flower-beds would also be set up in a 3,000 to 4,000 sq.ft area in the Observatory Hills. A temporary nursery would be set up in the Observatory Hills. Nine varieties of annuals, including Salvia, Zenia and Marigold, being grown there would be later replanted in the flower-beds. ``Ninety per cent of the 50,000 plants in the natural flower-beds will be in full bloom by the date of the inauguration'', the principal advisor to the show, K. Ramachandran, said. A large collection of orchids, anthuriums and other shade-loving foliage plants would be exhibited on the 90 cents to the left of the entrance of the palace premises. The Agri Fair, which was being organised separately since 1997, is being brought back to the flower show. The Department of Agriculture has been entrusted with the fruits and vegetable show, to be held on the second terrace of Suryakanthi exhibition grounds. Institutions and individuals will exhibit their plants in the first terrace of the exhibition grounds for the 85 rolling trophies. The third terrace has been set apart for commercial stalls, which will be allotted on a selective basis. Floral arts display and cut-flower exhibition would be organised in the Institution of Engineers Hall. The aquarium show being organised by Matsyafed would be an added attraction. Over 1,500 different varieties of roses will be exhibited in the Observatory Hills by the Kerala Rose Society. The competition, display and sale of plants by commercial growers and residents associations would also be held in the slopes of the hill. An amusement park and food stalls would be set up in the two acres belonging to the Kerala Water Authority behind the Observatory Hills. An automobile show would also be organised there. A 15-feet wide road is being developed near the Panchayat Association Hall. The `green house' being built by the Kerala Agri-Horticulture Society near the exhibition grounds, using the Rs. 4-lakh grant provided by the National Horticulture Board, is expected to be completed in one-and-a-half months.
