Kunte among impressive winners

JAMSHEDPUR OCT. 13. Top 12 boards produced results on the expected lines in the first round of the 11-round Swiss league fourth Tata International Open chess tournament at the J.R.D. Tata Sports Complex here on Monday.

International Master Sundarrajan Kidambi, ranked 13th, encountered stiff resistance in splitting points with Bangladesh's S.K. Khasim. In fact, Kidambi was fighting a losing battle in the middle game when his opponent, despite seeing a winning sequence, surprisingly accepted the draw offer against a much higher rated player.

Among the impressive winners were Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte. In a 35-move game of Sicilian Classical closed variation, all the pieces of G. Srinivas became passive, leaving little chance for manoeuvre in the back rank. Kunte got a rook for a Knight and was about to win another piece when his opponent resigned.

N. Srinath, a 9-year-old prodigy, gave a good display of his prowess against GM Dibyendu Barua on Board No. 6. Srinath was theoretically well prepared and entered the middle game with equality. The youngster overlooked a tactical shot which ended his aspiration of stretching a GM. Later, Barua was all praise for Srinath and predicted a bright future.

A total of 240 players from seven countries, Bangladesh, Russia, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Belarus and India, were in fray.
