JAMSHEDPUR OCT. 14. Three major upsets marked the second day of the Tata International Open chess tournament at the J.R.D. Tata Sports Complex here on Tuesday. Indian Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly was shocked by Pritam Singh in the second round in the morning, while compatriot Arindam Mukherjee surprised another GM Marat Dzhumaev of Uzbekistan. As the day drew to a close, Vinod Bhagwat stunned GM Abhijeet Kunte, the last two upsets coming in the third round.

Mukherjee, a 25-year-old Eastern Railway employee, produced a career best performance with a stunning play in Dutch defence. Dzhumaev's opening against an opponent, who had predetermined to attack from the word go, did not have the needed surprise.

Having gained advantage in the opening gambit itself, Mukherjee repulsed the Uzbek's attempts to reach equality. When Mukherjee won the first of two pawns in the 28th move after Dzhumaev miscalculated in the late middle game, he had no other option but to resign in the 50th after losing the second pawn.

Kunte, who was held to a draw in the morning by Laltu Chatterjee, had the ignominy of facing defeat at the hands of Vinod Bhagwat in the third round. The Indian GM lost in 39 moves in a Nimzo Indian Defence game. Bhagwat had a good day by holding top seed Dmitry Svetushkin in the morning.
