Left supports U.P. Govt. action

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 14. The Left parties, the Lok Janshakti and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) today supported the action by the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, against Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists and demanded that the Vajpayee Government provide all assistance sought by the State Government.

They termed the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's appeal to Mr. Yadav to allow the activists to proceed to Ayodhya — as they had promised that the rally would be peaceful — as both "dubious and dangerous".

In a statement, the politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said that similar assurances were given by the VHP and other RSS outfits in 1992 when they "proceeded to demolish" the Babri Masjid and even the Supreme Court was assured that the Masjid would be protected by the then BJP-led State Government.

The politburo condemned the VHP declaration that any attempt to stop its activists from congregating at Ayodhya on October 17 would result in "communal riots" all over the country. "This is nothing but an open challenge to the rule of law and the Constitution".

Supporting the arrests by the U.P. Government, the CPI disapproved of the Prime Minister's suggestion. "The Prime Minister's statement actually encouraged the VHP," it said.

The IUML general secretary, E. Ahamed, asked the U.P. Government to ensure that the rule of law was upheld at all cost. He expressed surprise at the faith reposed by Mr. Vajpayee in the VHP. ``Mr. Narasimha Rao had reposed faith in them, and they repaid it by demolishing the Babri- Masjid," he said.
