A police team was sent to the locality on information that Salim Golwala, a life convict who escaped from the Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad about a year ago, was hiding there. However, some locals protested against the presence of the policemen, claiming that Salim was not there, and pelted stones at them. Police burst about 20 teargas shells and later opened five rounds of fire to disperse the mob. Salim reportedly gave the slip in the melee. Seven persons, including two women, were arrested for stone-throwing and taken to the Vadi police station. But a group of women came to the station and demanded their release. The mob threw stones at the station and tried to break the police cordon to release the arrested persons. Police fired five more rounds in which a woman was killed on the spot. At least three persons, including two policemen, were injured. The Police Commissioner, Sudhir Sinha, denied that Salim had any connection with the Godhra train carnage as reported in some television channels and said 15 offences were registered against the convict and he was also suspected of being involved in the recent murder of a Muslim in Vadodara. An additional three companies of the State Reserve Police was rushed to Vadodara where the situation was reported to be under control.
