In a statement here, he said they could no longer remain silent when the issue took a serious turn with VHP volunteers planning to organise a meeting at Ayodhya on October 17. If they were really interested in maintaining secularism, they should quit the Government. Their continued silence, he alleged, had exposed their double standard.
`Do away with village
panchayat courts'
Mr. Veeramani also urged the Chief Minister to bring a law to do away with ``village panchayat courts'' operating without legal sanction in some rural areas. It was unfortunate that rule of some individuals was still prevailing in certain villages and they were acting in an ``autocratic manner'' taking law into their hands. If the Government felt that there would be opposition for abolishing the system, it could think of reviving the old gram panchayat courts. He demanded filling up of vacancies in the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission by giving preference to Dalits and postpone the collection of rent arrears from tenants of temple land.
