In his complaint, the city public prosecutor said the Tamil daily, Theekkathir, published a speech by the Congress leader, Peter Alphonse, criticising the anti-conversion law with a view to defaming the Chief Minister and sustaining the daily's circulation. The speech, as reported on December 18, 2002, criticised the law banning forcible conversions and alleged that the AIADMK Government was toeing the BJP line. The CPP said the law was enacted only to ensure that socio-economic conditions were not exploited in making people embrace another religion. "The tone and tenor of the article clearly shows the deliberate motive on the part of Theekkathir to underplay and belittle the services rendered to the minorities by the Chief Minister." The speech was made and reported out of "jealousy and political ill-will," he said. While Mr. Varadarajan, who is the printer and publisher of Theekkathir, and V. Parameshwaran, editor, appeared before the judge, counsel for Mr. Alphonse moved a petition for dispensing with his personal appearance in court. The judge, M. Jeyapaul, posted the matter for November 10.
