Single-window clearance for BIS norms

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 14. The Central Government proposes to set up a single-window clearance — possibly in New Delhi — for Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms for manufactured goods, the Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs, Sharad Yadav, said here today.

Speaking on the theme of `Global standards for the global information society. at a function here to mark the World Standards Day, the Minister said a transparent framework of information and technology (ICT) related policy could change the way in which people interact while promoting social and economic opportunities world-wide. The Minister informed that the BIS had recognised the requirements of the society for standardisation in communication and information technology. Seven technical committees were working for various streams of engineering such as radio communication, waveguides, telecommunications equipment, fibre optics, software systems, computer hardware and information security. These committees had formulated 260 Indian standards. Of these, the standards on communication protocols were used most widely. At present, the BIS is formulating standards on cyber security and Motion Pictures Expert Group (MPEG).
