Attempt on Naidu's life: two identified

HYDERABAD OCT. 14. The Andhra Pradesh police have identified two of the assailants who have participated in the assassination attempt on the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, based on the description provided by the shopkeeper who sold the dumbbells, which were used as shrapnel in the mines.

According to sources, the police zeroed in on Takkallapally Vasudeva Rao alias Ashanna, a member of the Permanent Action Team (PAT), and Dussa Sankar alias Ramesh, a member of the PW State Military Commission (SMC), as being actively involved in the preparation, planting and detonation of the claymore mines on the Chief Minister's convoy on October 1.

It is said that the police teams found that dumbbells weighing more than 75 kg were bought from a sports store in Tirupati. They were sawn off using a lathe machine. The metal balls as well as the handle of the dumbbell were used as shrapnel in the mines.

The duo, sources disclosed, came on a motorcycle and made the purchases , strengthening the reports that the mines were planted at least 30 to 45 days ago on the embankment of the ghat road.
