Abhinav, Vaidehi enter semifinals

By Our Sports Reporter

KOZHIKODE OCT. 14. The under-16 boys' top seed, G.M. Nandish of Karnataka, and the second seed in the girls' under-16, Neha Pandit of Maharashtra, were the biggest casualties on Tuesday at the V.K. Krishna Menon indoor stadium in the SBT 17th National sub-junior badminton championship. Their conquerers — both unseeded — in the quarterfinals were Abhinav Kapoor from Maharashtra (he won in three games, 15-13, 8-15, 15-1) and Vaidehi Dave of Gujarat (11-9, 6-11, 11-8).

The other higher-seed player to taste defeat in the round of last eight was second seed Vaishali Baria of Gujarat in the girls' under-13, who was beaten 11-7, 7-11, 7-11 by Sruthi Sreedhar of Karnataka, seeded sixth.

In the pre-quarterfinals earlier in the day, the boys' under-13 third seed Pratik Patel and the seeds No. 4 and 5 in the girls' under-13, Afda Taqfi (Karnataka) and Jancy James (Andhra), were knocked out.

Abhinav was impressive, especially with his smashes, in his win against Nandish, who looked too tired to put up a fight in the final game. "I knew that stamina wasn't the strong point of Nandish,'' said the victor, "so I was feeling very confident going into the deciding game.''
