The party has come out strongly against any move to name the university after Ms. Gandhi. So worked up is the BJP over the issue that some of its members are going to stage a dharna at the Basaveshwara Circle here on Wednesday to press the demand for naming the university after Akka Mahadevi. The President of the party's State unit, H.N. Ananth Kumar, has also demanded the appointment of a woman as the first vice-chancellor of the new university. Mr. Kumar also paid homage to the former Chief Minister, S. Nijalingappa, by visiting his samadhi near Chitradurga on Monday. He alleged that the Government had neglected the samadhi. The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Jagadish Shettar, and the Chairman of the campaign committee, B.S. Yediyurappa, wanted the university named after Akka Mahadevi who was perhaps, the first Kannadiga woman to compose poems.
