Letters to the Editor
Sir, The attack on the Congress MP, Mani Shankar Aiyar, near Karaikal on Monday, allegedly by AIADMK men, is a clear illustration of a political culture of intolerance. It is to be seen how the police deal with the crime.
S. Srimoolanathan,
Sir, According to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, when she donated an elephant calf to the Guruvayoor temple, Mr. Aiyer said that on becoming CM, he would donate her to the temple. Yet the Congressmen whine when the VHP uses sobriquets to refer to the Congress leader, Sonia Gandhi. It is no one's case that the VHP brand of campaign is correct though.
Narayanan,
Sir, Ms. Jayalalithaa's outburst at Nagapattinam ( Oct. 14 ) was unfortunate. Politicians criticising each other in the media is common. A person of her stature should not have expressed her anger in public. The attack on Mr. Aiyar is reprehensible. True, his writing was not in good taste and lacked maturity. But a direct confrontation with the MP could have been avoided.
S. Viswanathan,
