Sir, The stay on the Calcutta High Court order banning rallies during weekdays in the city comes as a relief ( Oct. 14 ). The Left Front Government is to be complimented for taking a firm stand on the issue.

Sir, In a democracy, one can neither define what forms a protest should take nor limit the forms of protest through judicial intervention. A solution to the problems caused by bandhs and processions lies in political parties, trade unions, student bodies and the like adopting a code of conduct as is done during elections.

Sir, During the row over the Cauvery issue last year, both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka forced a bandh on a weekday ensuring total disruption of normal life. What did this exercise achieve except the show of muscle power and political authority?
