Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Staff Reporter
Speaking at a valedictory function of a women empowerment training programme conducted by Asha Nivas, an NGO here recently, Ms. Sahu said projects such as training of women in domestic work would boost their self-confidence and improve their economic condition. With people above 60 years forming 8.5 per cent of Tamil Nadu's population, Ms. Sahu said women could be trained in need-based areas such as geriatric care. Ms. Sahu later distributed certificates and identity cards to women trained as domestic workers. The two-month long residential programme aided by the Kerala Catholic Society (KCS) trained the candidates in domestic childcare, culinary and communication skills besides vocational skills such as basket weaving, envelope and candle making. The State Planning Commission member and chairman of project services, KCS, T.V. Antony, president of KCS, Joseph Thomas, and director of Asha Nivas, Kurian Thomas, participated.
