SP refutes allegations by JD(S)

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN OCT. 18. The Superintendent of Police, M. Nanjundaswamy, on Saturday said he had acted impartially in the case pertaining to the assault on the Janata Dal (Secular) worker, Subramanya, on Thursday. He said there was no substance in the allegations levelled against him by the JD(S) leaders.

Addressing a press conference here, he said the Police Department would go by evidence and not by the statements issued by political parties.

The former Prime Minister and JD(S) President, H.D. Deve Gowda, and H.K. Javare Gowda, MP, had alleged on Friday that the inaction of the police was responsible for the incident.

Reacting to the allegation that a complaint was yet to be registered in this regard, Mr. Nanjundaswamy said that as Mr. Subramanya and his relatives had not issued any statement, it had become difficult for them to act.

He added that the ambiguity in the medico-legal certificate was also hampering further investigation.

He said it was mentioned in the certificate that the case had been referred to a major hospital, and nothing was clear in it. Though the police tried to register a case, the people who had assembled at the hospital prevented them from doing so, he said.

The department had stepped up security for Mr. Subramanya, who was being treated at a hospital in Bangalore. One Assistant Sub-Inspector, a head constable, and three constables had been posted for his security. However, a few people were misinterpreting this as an attempt by the police to arrest Mr. Subramanya, he said.

Mr. Nanjundaswamy said "some people" in Bangalore were not allowing the police to get a statement from Mr. Subramanya.

Referring to medical reports, he said Mr. Subramanya was recovering in the hospital.
