It is learnt that Mr. Prasanna had handed in his resignation more than a month ago after the meeting of Ranga Samaj, the managing body of the drama school and repertory company. However, no word over the acceptance of his resignation has been heard from Ranga Samaj. Sources close to Mr. Prasanna told The Hindu that he was "hurt" over the manner in which he was criticised during the Ranga Samaj meeting. It is learnt that a few officials called him a "mason", apparently referring to the development works initiated by him. It is learnt that while Mr. Prasanna defended his work to strengthen the infrastructure at Rangayana, the members taunted him for not producing a play during his tenure as the Director of the institute. It is learnt that they said he was made the Director of Rangayana to produce plays, and not to indulge in "construction work like a mason". Sources said Mr. Prasanna was only waiting for the completion of the play, Hamlet, to put in his papers. A preview of the play was held on Friday, and the regular shows on weekends commenced from today. The Director, an alumnus of the famed National School of Drama, told The Hindu that infrastructure was as important as the production of plays. Creating infrastructure would enhance the quality of the plays staged at Rangayana, Mr. Prasanna said. Defending his decision, Mr. Prasanna said he had tendered his resignation to the Ranga Samaj and it was up to the officials to accept it. In case his resignation was not accepted, he would stay at Rangayana to complete his term, he added. Mr. Prasanna had recently expressed the desire to go back to Heggodu to work at the grassroots level. He had also said that he would work with theatre artistes in North Karnataka region. Apart from the comments made by the members of Ranga Samaj, the Director had also expressed his displeasure over the controversy surrounding the installation of a name board at Rangayana.
