Efforts on to popularise energy-efficient lamps

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Oct. 18. Lighting accounts for well under 10 per cent of the total power consumption in developing countries, while it is around 17 per cent in India. Efforts are on to bring down this percentage by using energy-efficient lamps by institutions and individuals, according to the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers (ISLE).

The ISLE, according to its Karnataka unit Secretary, M.S.N. Swamy, has been championing the increased use of energy-efficient lamp sources, especially by large user institutions so that power scarcity could be significantly reduced.

It is estimated that 1,00,100 MW of electricity is generated in the country. The additional demand for power during the Ninth Plan is to the tune of 40,245 MW. Against this, the additional power generation during this period is projected at 21,565 MW by the Planning Commission. The ISLE argues that as the usage of energy-efficient lamps increases, their cost too will progressively reduce through the resultant economies of scale. Among the energy-efficient lamps now available are 16 mm T5 FTL, metal halide lamps, high pressure sodium vapour lamps, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), light emitting diodes (LEDs), fibre optic light sources, etc. According to ISLE, the most commonly used 38 mm. 40 W FTL on an average produces 60 lumens per watt whereas an energy-efficient 16 mm. T5 tube lamp produces 104 lumens per watt, effecting a power saving of 35 per cent. To create increased awareness among the public on these issues, the State unit of the ISLE is organising an international lighting conference and exhibition on November 21 and 22 here.
