`Only Hindi can promote unity'

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Oct. 18. The former Lok Sabha Speaker, Balram Jakhar, said here on Saturday that learning Hindi could be encouraged further with the Union Government offering a stipend to Kannada-speaking students who learnt Hindi. Speaking at the 60th Annual Day and 39th convocation of the parishat, Mr. Jakhar disagreed with the idea that languages divided the country. "India is known for its rich linguistic heritage, and while I respect all our languages, I have a special regard for Hindi. Only this language can promote brotherhood among all Indians,'' he said. Every nation needed one common language for communication between people of different regions, and in India, Hindi was admirably suited to fill this need. Degrees of Hindi Ratnakara were awarded to students who completed the Hindi course, and Hindi teachers were felicitated on the occasion. Pushpalata Taneja, Director, Central Hindi Directorate, released a souvenir.
