By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Oct. 18. As many as 145 candidates are contesting the elections to 31 seats in the Mahadevapura City Municipal Council.

The State Election Commission, after going through the affidavits filed by the candidates as required under orders issued recently, has given the details observed from the affidavits.

The election is scheduled for Sunday.

Out of 200 nominations received, eight were rejected for want of details and signatures. After withdrawal of nominations, 145 candidates are left in the fray. Of them, 74 candidates have not passed the SSLC examination.

The educational qualifications of 44 candidates range from SSLC to PUC, and only 27 are graduates. Criminal cases were filed against four of the candidates, and two of them were acquitted by the courts. Cases are pending against Jayarama Reddy (Ward No. 26) and P. Rajanna (Ward No. 16).

The disclosure of assets by the candidates is revealing. On verification, it has been found that 91 of them have given information that they own movable property valued below Rs. 1 lakh. Forty candidates have declared movable property ranging in value from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh, and 41 have declared that they own articles worth more than Rs. 10 lakh. On the liabilities side, 29 candidates have dues to be paid to the Government and public institutions, according to the affidavits.
