Govt. fears defeat in House, say CPI, RSP

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Oct. 18. The CPI State secretary, Veliyam Bhargavan, and the RSP State secretary, T.J. Chandrachoodan, have come down heavily on the Government stand that there was no question of an urgent session of the Assembly being convened to discuss the Opposition motion seeking removal of Vakkom B. Purushothaman as Speaker.

In separate statements here today, Mr. Bhargavan and Mr. Chandrachoodan accused the Government of having adopted an undemocratic position on the issue. While the CPI leader said there was every justification for convening an urgent session of the House given the charge that Mr. Purushothaman had flouted the great tradition of neutrality of the Speaker's office, the RSP leader said the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, M.M. Hassan's statement on the issue was borne out of the fear that the Government would be defeated on the floor of the House.

Mr. Bhargavan said Mr. Hassan's statement that the House could be convened only when the Government had business to transact showed his `ignorance' about the legislature and parliamentary democracy.
