The Nirmal DSP, Vidyasagar Rao, said the Nirmal Town SI, Sambaiah, and the CI, Radhakrishna, were on night patrolling following a spate of robberies. The SI accompanied by two other police personnel led a patrolling party and was moving near posh Priyadarshini colony, when he saw five persons moving under suspicious circumstances. The SI immediately alerted the CI who was patrolling the nearby area. The two officers along with other police personnel surrounded the area and started chasing the miscreants. The suspected robbers hid near a bush and started pelting stones at police parties. A constable, Sattaiah, sustained bleeding injury in the stone-pelting and fell unconscious. Police then opened fire at the fleeing robbers, killing two persons on the spot. Three others managed to escape though the police chased them till the Bhainsa-Basar road. The duo sustained two and three bullets wounds each. The slain persons are yet to be identified. Police recovered iron rods, knives and house-breaking implements carried by the miscreants. A gold waistband was recovered from the encounter site. The DSP rushed to the spot on information and ordered shifting of the bodies to the Nirmal area hospital pending post-mortem. Sniffer dogs and the CLUES team visited the scene of the offence and lifted fingerprints. Mr. Vidyasagar Rao said the police had stepped up night patrolling in wake of 16 cases of burglaries and robberies in Nirmal town alone. The posh Priyadarshini colony had been the target of the robber gangs. The DSP said victims appeared to be members of a Maharashtra robber gang.
