Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Special Correspondent
The four power distribution companies (discoms) will implement the "one-premises-one-connection" norm based on an order of the Regulatory Commission in 2000. The APERC has now asked the discoms to complete the removal of the extra connections by October 31. On its part, the Central Power Distribution Company, covering the twin cities and six other districts, launched a drive for dismantling multiple connections. A door-to-door survey, especially in Hyderabad, was initiated for identifying extra services held by households/apartments/multi-storeyed buildings, commercial establishments and industries. If a premises is found with more than one connection, notice will be served on the owners for the removal within a week. If there is no initiative from their side, the staff will do the dismantling with the seizure of the material. There are 50 lakh consumers under the APCPDC, including 10 lakhs in the twin cities. The discom CMD, Dinesh Kumar, however, says there are about 4,000-5,000 apartments in Hyderabad-Secunderabad alone using multiple connections. Households used multiple meters on the pretext of having two families under one roof. They, however, will allow two connections if there are two kitchens. The CMD justified the measure on the grounds of revenue loss and overall health of the power sector.
