It took about six weeks to complete the painting in mixed media, says the artist, Francis Kodamkandath. Commenting on the portrait, the cartoonist, Yesudasan, said it might be the largest portrait of Mother, reported in the world. Mr. Kodamkandath, who is the superintendent of customs at the Karippur airport, had presented a smaller version of the picture to Mother Teresa when she visited Kozhikode on January 14, 1994. Seeing her own portrait without the features of the face, Mother Teresa had told the artist: "I am happy that my face is not there but I am very happy because my charity is well depicted.'' In the presence of a large congregation of over 450 nuns, the Archbishop of Thrissur, Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, presented a gold medal to Mr. Kodamkandath.
