The body of a militant killed in a 24-hour-long encounter at a shopping complex in Srinagar on Saturday being removed by police personnel.
The security forces who stormed the Dr. Ali Jan complex on Friday rescued the 25 civilians trapped there, but suspended the operation during the night after initial reverses. At dawn today the commandos again stormed the complex and killed both the militants. One of the militants was killed in the morning. This prompted the other to fire continuously before he too was shot dead, a BSF official said. Hundreds of paramilitary forces and police went inside the complex after the gun battle ended. ``We are searching for weapons and explosives. The search operation may take some time,'' the BSF official said. Windowpanes of the building were shattered and minor damage was caused to the offices and shops in the complex. Three BSF men were injured today and were hospitalised. Pieces of broken windowpanes littered the lawn outside the four-storey Dr. Ali Jan shopping complex. In the gun battle that began on Friday, two BSF personnel were killed while 15 persons, including four officers of the paramilitary and police, were injured.
