dated October 21, 1953: Tito's Warning on Trieste

President Tito of Yugoslavia declared in Belgrade on the 19th that the Western Powers' decision to return Zone `A' of Trieste to Italy constituted a grave danger to peace in that part of the world. His statement to a correspondent of the Brazilian paper, Diario da Natie, was released by the official Yugoslav news agency Tanjug. President Tito said, "The British and Americans wanted first to consolidate the position of Signor Pella (Italian Premier) and enable him to enter into the European Defence Community by a vote of the Italian National Assembly; and secondly to remove by their unilateral act — to the detriment of Yugoslavia — the Trieste problem from the list of unsolved problems erroneously calculating that this would contribute to stabilization in this part of Europe. All this is only a repetition of concessions made to the extortionist tactics applied by the Italy's rulers to the Western Powers." Asked how Yugoslavia intended to submit the Trieste problem to the United Nations in the event of failure of a suggested four-Power Conference, President Tito replied, "Our Government will take no action to bring up this issue up so long as there is a possibility of settling the matter by agreement among the interested States."
