A befitting reply

Sir, — Thanks to the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, for giving a befitting reply to the mischievous remarks of a Pakistani journalist ("Indian Muslims are not a minority: Saudi Arabia," Oct. 21).

Our leaders have been telling Pakistan from the time of Partition that they should not interfere in India's internal affairs. Indian Muslims are proud of their secular and democratic country, known for its unity in diversity.

V.M. Khaleelur Rahman,
Ambur, T.N.

Sir, — The remark should go a long way in correcting the attitude of Pervez Musharraf, whose sole aim seems to be to convince the international community that India is anti-Islamic.

Other OIC members should also force Pakistan to be realistic in its approach towards India, particularly on Kashmir.

K.D. Viswanaathan,
Coimbatore, T.N.

Sir, — Perhaps we will also be well advised to ponder if it is proper to distinguish citizens as majority and minority on the basis of religion.

As Swami Chinmayananda once said "... minority consists of those who are disabled, uneducated, unemployed, suffering, homeless, shelterless..."

Avuthu Srihari,
Secunderabad

Sir, — India has a Muslim population of over 10 crores. The OIC ought to have insisted on India's representation of its views, especially on the alleged repression of human rights in Jammu and Kashmir.

M. Rangaswamy,

Chennai
