Sonia's foreign origin a `non-issue'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI OCT. 21. The AICC secretary, T. Subbarami Reddy, today joined issue with the BJP spokesperson, Muktar Abbas Naqvi, for raising the question of foreign origin of the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi.

In a statement, he said the Congress was deeply shocked at the personal attack made by the BJP. Ms. Gandhi belonged to the family of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and was elected with a thumping majority from Bellary and Amethi. She was the undisputed leader of the Congress and had led the party to power in 16 States.

The past elections had shown Ms. Gandhi's acceptability as a leader of the country. "We consider that Mr. Naqvi's statement is an attack on the Constitutional provisions as well as on the voters' mandate," he added. "It's a surprise that Mr. Naqvi is knowingly trying to divert the real issue of development in the country by raising a non-issue."
