CBI acting under pressure: Mayawati

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 21. The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party president, Mayawati, who is facing CBI cases in the Rs. 175-crore Taj Corridor project and for allegedly amassing wealth beyond her known sources of income, today accused the agency of "acting under political pressure" from the BJP-led Government at the Centre.

Addressing a press conference here, Ms. Mayawati blamed a section of the print and electronic media for "twisting" facts.

Referring to the writ petition filed by her on Monday before the Allahabad High Court — seeking quashing of the CBI's first information report and restraining the CBI from arresting her on the basis of the allegations contained in the FIR — she said the cases were registered with a view to "tarnish her image".

Asked about the CBI charge that about Rs. 3 crores was found in her bank accounts, she said: "All my bank accounts have been mentioned to the Income Tax Department."

To a question if the BSP would contest all the seats in the coming Assembly elections, to the four State, Ms. Mayawati said the thinking so far was to put up candidates for all Assembly seats in Delhi, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
