Join mainstream, CM tells naxalites

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD OCT. 21. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has offered the hand of friendship to naxalites, but on the condition that they shun violence first and join the mainstream. He was equally tough stating that the Government would not tolerate violence and it would be firmly dealt with.

Mr. Naidu was speaking at the commemoration parade at the Police Martyrs Memorial in Hyderabad on Tuesday. The parade is organised every year on October 21 to pay respects to the policemen who have laid down their lives in the duty of the nation.

Referring to the recent attack on his life, the Chief Minister said he would not fear such attacks and would continue to work for the development of the State, drawing inspiration from the sacrifices made by policemen and the people. He said the naxalites harped on outdated and defeated ideology and they were resorting to violence only to make their presence felt. The movement which started with some ideology had now become a place for criminals. He said the people had rejected naxalites but they were seeking the people's support instilling fear among them through violence. "They are killing policemen, politicians and other people. What will they achieve killing those who are following their constitutional duties? " he asked.

He said that the entire world was moving towards democracy realising the power of the people. Even communist countries such as China and Vietnam were making progress adopting developmental policies. Naxalites continued to believe that power could be achieved only through gun but this would take them nowhere.

He said the Government strongly believed that development could take place only when the law and order situation was right and peace prevailed and it would continue to work to protect the people's rights and uphold the law of the land. He said the State was on the developmental path despite facing problems such as militancy, factionalism, rowdyism, communalism and ISI activities. The efforts of the Government to contain them had been quite successful. Factionalism had come down while communal peace prevailed due to the tough measures taken by the Government.

Mr. Naidu called for honesty and discipline among the police force for winning the confidence of the people
