Mr. Sastry, who began his career in Vishwakarnataka in 1936, was associated with Harijana, Chaya, and Deshabandhu newspapers. He was the Editor of Janapragathi and columnist for its sister publication, Mysindia. He joined Deccan Herald in 1961 and worked as a Special Correspondent. He later worked for Kailasa and Gokula newspapers of the Thayinadu Group. He was the first Editor of Kannada Prabha. Mr. Sastry was a guide to many junior journalists of his time. He was president of the Mysore (Karnataka) Journalists' Association and Mysore Journalists' Cooperative Society. In 1979 he became the head of the news agency, Samachar Bharati. Mr. Sastry received several awards including the Karnataka Patrika Academy Award, T.S.R. Award, Khadri Shamanna Award, P.R. Ramaiah Award, and Rajyotsava Award. He is survived by his wife, four sons, and two daughters. Expressing his condolences on the death of Mr. Sastry, the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, has said that the State had lost a front-ranking journalist. The Minister for Information, Allum Veerabhadrappa, and the Sericulture Minister, H.M. Revanna have mourned the death of Mr. Sastry. N. Arjun Deva, President, Karnataka Madhyama Academy, has also mourned the death of Mr. Sastry. The Press Club of Bangalore has said that Mr. Sastry was known for his erudition, boldness and thorough professionalism.
