He told presspersons here that the Government had taken action several times against officials involved in irregularities based on newspaper reports. "If the Lokayukta does not submit reports to the Government, what can the Government do?" he asked. The Government was committed to curbing corruption and the Lokayukta's assistance was required for the purpose. Mr. Thimmappa said the department was going to take action against doctors who were not staying in the quarters allotted to them. There were 323 medical officers and 690 auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) who were not staying in the quarters allotted to them. Quarters were not available for 819 medical officers and 1,324 ANMs. He said charges would be framed against such doctors and ANMs and they would be proceeded against. The Government had been sending notices to these doctors, but to no avail. The Minister said three officials of the Drugs Control Department, including the Drugs Controller, had been suspended for irregularities. The matter had been referred to the Lokayukta for investigation. He said the State would be writing to the Centre to amend the Drugs and Cosmetics Act as most pharmaceutical companies were located outside the State and it was difficult for the Government to initiate action. The State would be writing to the Centre to amend the Salt Act to ensure supply of iodised salt.
