Rs. 40 cr. to be sought for rain relief

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Oct. 22. The Government, which sought a Central assistance of Rs. 22 crore to provide relief to rain-affected areas in 15 taluks of Bidar, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi districts, will revise its estimate to Rs. 40 crore.

The revised estimate of funds required for relief programmes has become necessary because of the extensive damage caused by rains after the initial request was made to the Centre, according to the Additional Chief Secretary to Government and Development Commissioner, Vijay Gore.

Addressing presspersons who met him, Mr. Gore said the five-member Central study team returned here today after a tour of the rain-affected areas in Bidar, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi districts in three batches.

Mr. Gore said the team, which ascertained the magnitude of the damage caused by unprecedented rains, promised to give its report to the Centre by the end of next week. He expressed confidence that it would recommend to the Centre to provide the sum sought by the State. Meanwhile, the Government would send a revised estimate of the funds required for relief operations, he added.

To a question whether the Government was hopeful of getting the funds sought from the Centre despite the latter's response to the request for drought relief assistance, he remarked that hope was eternal. The Centre should relax the norms for providing funds based on the circumstances, he added.
