Australian Nicholas Dunn, playing to scratch handicap in the 55+ age group returned the day's best card of one over 71, while teammate and runner-up from last year Alex Cleave in the 60 + age group shared second spot with Kiwi Ron Sisson both logging cards of three over 73. David Tarrant also of New Zealand was in fourth spot a stroke behind Cleave and Sisson. Nicholas Dunn played steady from the word go and after eight consecutive par scores putted a birdie on the ninth. Dunn revelled in the tough conditions on the back nine too and had par scores for the first six holes. The only two blemishes on Dunn's card came on the 16th and 17th holes where his two bogeys pushed his round one score to one over. Alex Cleave, the two handicapper from Lake Karrinwyup club, Perth had a mixed opening round. Starting off with a bogey, last year's runner-up ran into trouble with five consecutive bogeys from the 8th hole onwards. The saving grace for Cleave was the three birdies (3rd, 6th and 15th) which brought his final card to within two strokes of the leader. Ron Sisson kept the Kiwi flag flying in India with a good effort to share second place with Cleave. Sisson had a par 35 for the first nine with a birdie on the very first hole and a bogey on the seventh. His game slipped a bit on the back nine and with two bogeys and a double bogey (11th) had to be content with joint second place on the opening day. India's best performance came from Vikramjit SIngh who played to six over 76. The scores (first round): 1, Nicholas Dunn (71), 2. Ron Sisson and Alex Cleave (73 each); 4. David Tarrant 74, 5. Donald Moore and Joseph Pethes (75 each), 7. Vikramjit Singh (76), 8. Geoffrey Davey and Michael Grimsdick (77 each), 10. John Roche (78), 11. Ramlinge Gowda, David Cherry, Andrew Hopkins, Phil Yelavich and Ashok Singh Malik (79 each).
