African coaches spring a surprise

Hyderabad oct. 23. African track and field coaches who reached Hyderabad on Thursday sprang a surprise on the organisers when they declared that it is likely that Olympic sprinter Frankie Frederick may be also coming to Hyderabad for the Afro-Asian Games which are scheduled to begin at the GMC Balayogi stadium here on October 24. Meanwhile it has been confirmed that long jumper Anju George will be taking part and this will be her first appearance on home soil after winning the bronze in the world champiosnhip in Paris.

According to the organisers more than one hundred medallists of the recent African Games have now reached Hyderabad to take part in the Games. In addition to the above there are also several medallists of the Busan Asian Games who have already reported earlier.

Also confirmed is the participation of Indian tennis stars Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna who will lead the Asian challenge in their sport.

Other confirmed names of participants include stars of Indian athletics such as discuss thrower Neelam J Singh, heptathlete Soma Biswas, sprinter Saraswati Saha, middle distance runner K.M. Beenu, and shot putter Bahadur Singh.

Among those athletes who have won medals at the African Games and have reached Hyderabad are (Men): Hardius Penaar (South Africa-javelin gold); Walid Abdulrezak (Egypt - javelin silver); Burger Mabrechts (South Africa-shot put gold); Fathi Ebrahim (Egypt- shot put bronze); Chris Harmse (South Africa - hammer throw gold); Samsun Idiata (Nigeria - high jump bronze).

Women: Endurance Ojokolo (Nigeria- 100 mts silver); Merset Defar (Ethiopia -5000 mts gold); Kurre Dulecha (Ethiopia - 1500 mts gold); Ahmed Marwa (Egypt - hammer throw gold); Angela Teded (Nigeria - 100 mts gold); Wafa Esmail (Egypt - shot put bronze) and El Ghazakly (Egypt - discus gold).
