Department renamed

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 25. The Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has announced that the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy in the Union Health Ministry will soon be renamed as Department of Ayush.

Ayush is an abbreviation — `A' stands for Ayurveda, `Y' for Yoga and Natutopathy, `U' for Unani, `S' for Siddha and `H' for Homeopathy. Ayush in Hindi means life. Mr. Vajpayee made the announcement when a delegation of Ayurveda practitioners called on him on Friday on the occasion of Dhanwantri Jayanthi, the birth anniversary of the founder of Ayurveda.

The proposal for the name change was mooted by the Union Health Minister, Sushma Swaraj, on the ground that the present name was too "cumbersome". Also, "Ayush" would capture the essence of the indigenous systems of medicines.
